The One Word Poetry Festival is an in-person poetry festival, founded in 2021, to share the Power of Poetry and celebrate the countless ways poetry positively impacts our lives.

Join us as we kick off the festival with a special Youth Arts Showcase, displaying award-winning artwork by Rock Hill high school students. The evening will conclude with a poetry competition to decide the next Youth Poet Laureate.

Entry requires a canned good or other non-perishable item.

  • Youth Poetry Workshop: Blackout Poetry

    Saturday, June 1
    10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

    In the Gallery

    Learn how to make poems by marking and blacking out words from newspapers, books and magazines. Sure to be a lot of fun and a little messy! Led by Rock Hill Youth Poet Laureate Abigail McCluney.

    Kids age 5-12. Parents welcome.

  • Synesthesia and the Art of Imagery


    Saturday, June 1

    In this workshop, led by Ayanna Florence, the Women of the World Poetry Champion, participants will explore using synesthesia - experiencing one of your senses through another - to enhance imagery in poetry.

    This workshop is appropriate for teens & adults.

    Join Charleston children’s librarian, Melanie Clark, for a series of activities that emphasize the fun at the core of creative writing! We'll talk about character creation, plot elements, and how embracing the unusual can make stories truly unique.

  • Refresh! Finding the Unexpected

    Join Charlotte Poet Laureate and One Work Keynote Speaker, Jay Ward, to give yourself (and your writing) a much needed refresh. Learn a new language and discover a new way to immerse yourself into at poem, wind through its maze and feel that exhilarating rush when you finally emerge on the other end.

    Age 13+. All levels welcome.
